Is it 2009 all over again?

A mere eleven days ago, The White Panda released a mash-up masterpiece. Admittedly, it has been a while since I have listened to anything that has been labelled \”Mash-up\” (but essentially all mixes are mash-ups, right?). I have, however, forgotten the mastery of such songs. It is much more than a DJ-mix. It has layers, that are deep and intertwined so naturally that it is difficult to re-imagine the original without thinking about the new zest. This concept; the concept of concocting an original through the manipulation of originals, is what has always drawn me to this genre. The Pawprint is artfully smooth and succinct. It flows masterfully and is terribly hard to pause. I have to listen to it all the way through. And isn\’t that how we should be listening to music? Enough of the ADD riddled music culture that glue themselves to singles. Where is the fun in that? If you want to sit in your house, with your fancy dinner guests, while listening to an eloquent, uninterrupted album on your chic new stereo (you hip cat, you), this is the Album Du Jor.

At Lollapalooza 2011, I had the pleasure of seeing Mash-up greatness: Girl-Talk and The White Panda. If you weren\’t as cool as me, it\’s okay. You can redeem yourself by coming to The House of Blues at 8pm tonight (oh, and Win + Woo will be there too. Don\’t even get me started on them.).

Postscript: An interview with the mysterious duo will follow shortly. Stay tuned.
