Dillon Francis has a well-earned reputation for solid music and an uncommon sense of humor. His recent music video \”Exit Through the Donut Hole (I Can\’t Take It)\” further cements Dillon as the reigning king of weird EDM humor.

The video turns I Can\’t Take It, the third song off Dillon\’s debut album Money Sucks Friends Rule, into a nearly 15 minute mockumentary focusing on Dillon\’s life as a donut. In an era where a fine EDM music video is simply following around the band touring or a series of India-themed dances, Dillon deserves respect for aiming higher.

The concept is executed well. Donut Dillon has a former friend in man-sized Broccoli, he awkwardly flirts with a roommate and a taco stand girl, and fights with cops. Highlights included Donut Dillon\’s apartment being paid for by his \”Sugar Daddy\” – a literal Sugar Donut grandfather – and Dillon awkwardly flirting with the taco stand girl with the following conversation:

  • Donut Dillon: \”I made you that [hat with a donut and the word D.I.C.K]\”
  • Taco Girl: \”Dick…?\”
  • Donut Dillon: \”Do you like… that?\”
  • [awkward pause]
  • Donut Dillon: \”Donuts in Crisis Control. They.. they spelled it wrong.\”
  • Taco Girl: \”Oh! I get it! I like it! It\’s cool.\”

The video is related to or at least inspired by \”I Can\’t Take It,\” culminating in Donut Dillon and Broccoli deciding they can no longer take the abuse and comically fighting with a couple cops. But the video delivers I Can\’t Take It sporadically and in choppy bursts, choosing instead to focus on the life of Donut Dillon.

Overall a fun video inspired by a good song that increases my respect for Dillon as an EDM-comedian not afraid to take risks. While the video is not a very good way to listen to the actual song, it did make me want to relisten to Money Sucks Friends Rule.
